Problem and Solution (Continue)

Last class, I learn new unit "Problem & Solution". I learn about "Teen pregnancies" and write diagram.
For today I learn about text. There is 4 text and write diagram
This is example for today and text.

The term “machine gun” is commonly applied to any gun that is designed to fire repeatedly and in rapid succession for as long as the trigger is held down.  During the course of warfare, the trigger of some machine guns may be held down almost continuously for hours to create suppressant fire (rounds fired not necessarily to kill an enemy, but to prevent them from attacking).  All of this firing can generate a lot of heat, which may cause the weapon to overheat and malfunction.  But this situation has been addressed in a number of ways.  For one, practically all machine guns fire from an open bolt, which allows air to cool the breach between bursts of fire.  Additionally, some machine guns have removable barrels, which allow hot barrels to be replaced.  And some advanced machine guns even have sophisticated barrel cooling systems, which maintain a functional heat level within the weapon.  As you might have concluded, a lot of brain power has gone into keeping those guns firing.

The term "Amnesia" refers to complete or partial memory loss.  Almost all of us will experience some form of Amnesia in our lives, even if it's just a simple case of verbal amnesia, like forgetting someone's name.  Fortunately, there are things that you can do to prevent amnesia.  Here is a list of foods that you can eat to improve your memory: almonds, walnuts, bananas, honey, apples, and black pepper.  Though these foods may not reverse post-traumatic amnesia, they should improve your memory in daily life if you eat them regularly enough.

Exemplification (Continue) & Problem and Solution

From, the last time I learn “Exemplification”. I think rather difficult because I don’t have concentrate but I try and read again and again.
What did you learn?
I learn about Exemplification. I read about text and answer the question.
For example.
What is Language?

At the approach of danger many birds utter warning call: this is an example of animals communicating with each other.
Cries, such as those of anger, fear and pleasure, are uttered by apes.
There are important differences between human language and animal communication: For instance, animals’ cries are not articulate.
Animals’ cries lack, for example, the kind of structure that enables us to divide a human utterance into words.
A good illustration of changing an utterance by substituting one word for another is a soldier who can say…
The number of signals that an animal can make is very limited: the great tit is a case in point.

What did you find easy?
I read text easy but some words I read wrong.
What did you find difficult?
I read vocabulary wrong.
What did you solve the problem?
I find meaning from dictionary online by application on mobile phone.

Problem and Solution
Problem and Solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution). The problem and solution text structure may seem like it would be easy to recognize, but it can be moderately difficult to identify because it is frequently confused with the cause and effect pattern of organization, as they both have relational structures; however, if you read the passage and look specifically for both a problem and a solution to the problem, you should find it pretty easy to distinguish from cause and effect, as cause and effect passages do not propose solutions to any negative occurrences within the passage but rather just explain why or how they happen.
What did you learn?
I learn new unit "Problem and Solution". But I think this unit is difficult for me.
This is example for this unit.
Ex.
It seems like there has been a surge in teen pregnancies these days. Teen pregnancies make it very difficult for young mothers to pursue their dreams and meet the demands of an infant. Fortunately, most teen pregnancies can be easily prevented by using birth control; however, even birth control is not 100% effective. The most effective way to prevent teen pregnancies is abstinence, which is 100% effective.
There are also a few signal words which may indicate that information in a passage is ordered in the problem and solution pattern of organization: propose, solution, answer, issue, problem, problematic, remedy, prevention, and fix.

Exemplification

Exemplification writing uses specific, vivid examples for the purpose of adding more information to explain, persuade, define, or illustrate a general idea. Likewise, exemplification provides solid support and strong evidence to prove the writer’s main statement. Appropriate examples also create interest in a writing assignment.
Ex.

Uses the plural word hazards to signal an exemplification paragraph follows.

Definition and Classification

Definition and Classification

Today, I learn new unit “Definition and Classification”.

What did you learn?

I learn about “Definition and classification”.

In textbooks, you are sure to meet unfamiliar technical words and their definitions. You will also find that writes use classification to divide general concepts into a number of different types. Identifying and understanding texts that contain definition and classification will help your academic reading.

Skill Practice

Ex.
Nutritionists have determined that there are two main types of fats in food: saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Within unsaturated fats, we can distinguish between monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats.

What did you find easy?
Reading in the text, I can read but maybe I read wrong some word.
What did you find difficult?
Vocabulary is difficult. Because I've never seen before.
What did you solve the problem?
I find meaning from dictionary online by application on mobile phone. And ask to my friend.

Cause and Effects (Continue)

Yesterday, I learned new unit “Cause and Effects”. Today, I learn “Cause and Effects (Continue).

What did you learn?

Today, I learn “Cause and Effects” continue yesterday.

Ex.2

In the 1970s, there was an encouraging fall in the number of people who were killed in the accidents on U.S. highways. According to some experts, the most important factor in the increase was the 55 mph speed limit that was introduced in 1973. The original reason for lowering the speed limit was economic; the government was attempting to reduce gasoline use at a time when fuel prices were high.
B > A > C

A. There was a large decrease in traffic death on U.S. highways in the 1970s.
B. The country needed to reduce the amount of gasoline people were using.
C. The government introduced the 55 mph speed limit.
This is just a sample of the content.

Cause and Effects

Today, I learn new unit "Cause and Effects"

What did you learn?
I learn a new unit “Cause & Effects”
Cause & Effects is used to show how the facts or concepts result due to other facts, events or concepts. Words that signal this type of text structure are because, since, therefore, if…then, as a result of, thus, and hence.  A graphic organizer may be used to represent the relationship between the causes and effects.
Ex.
Many people think that they can get sick by going into cold weather improperly dressed; however illnesses are not caused by temperature – they are cause by games. So while shivering outside in the cold probably will not strengthen your immune system, you’re more likely to contract an illness indoors because you will have a greater exposure to games.

Comparison and Contrast (Continue)

From yesterday, I learn "Comparison and Contrast". I learn difficult but I try.
What did you learn?
I learn about "Man and Woman Do They Speak the Same Language?

Sunday, 28 February 2016

Comparison and Contrast

A comparison and Contrast pattern presents similarities(comparisons) between two or more things, differences(contrasts) between two or more things, or both similarities and differences. Authors use it when they want to explain or describe hot two or more things are alike or different. they use it when they want to present opposing sides of an issue (such as the issue of gun control or capital punishment). For this reason, you may also hear the pattern referred to as ideas in opposition. Your job as a reader is to determine what is being compared or contrasted, and the ways in which they are similar or different (Elder,2008:133)
Ex.

Example: Apples and oranges are both fruits, which means that they have seeds inside of them. Each has a skin, but orange skins are thick and easy to peel. Apple skins are thinner and do not peel easily. Oranges also contain more acid than apples, but both fruits are delicious.
Identifying when the writer is comparing and contrasting is usually not difficult because the speaker will bounce back and forth between two subjects and this pattern is generally pretty easy to recognize.  However, here are some signal words that may indicate that the text is written using the compare and contrast organizational pattern: like, unlike, both, neither, similar, and different.

Procedure

Today is Sunday. I makeup class all day. Today, I learn 2 unit “Procedure” and “Comparison and Contrast”

What did you learn?

In the morning, I learn “Procedure”. The unit about how to something

Procedure or instruction (How something is done)

Instructions belong to a group of text-type concerned with procedures, which tell us how something is accomplished through a sequence of actions or steps. It is a very important genre in our society because it enables us to get things done, and it is equally common in the oral and written mode (Derewianka, 1991:27)

Purpose:

The purpose is to tell the reader how to do or make something.
The information is presented in a logical sequence of events which is broken up into small sequence steps. These texts are usually written in the present tense.
The most common example of a procedural text is a recipe
Text organization
The focus of instruction texts is on a sequence of action.
The structure is easily recognized, usually consisting of:
Goal (often indicated in the main heading and/or diagram)
Materials (listed in order of use)
Method (step oriented towards achieving the goal)

 Ingredients:

2 cups plain (all purpose) flour
1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 egg
5 tablespoons milk
1/2 cup (125g) butter or margarine
1 cup mashed ripe bananas
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

  Method:

1) Preheat oven to 175 degrees C or 350 degrees F.
2) Sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
3) In a separate large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter (or margarine)
4) Beat the egg slightly and mix into the creamed mixture along with the bananas.
5) Hand mix in the sifted dry ingredients and milk alternatively in around 3 intervals, starting with the dry.
6) Put the mixture into a greased and floured (or line with baking paper) 9”x5” loaf pan.
7) Bake at 175 degrees C (or 350 degrees F) until the top is brown and cracks on top, or a skewer when inserted comes out clean. *Mine took 52 minutes.

NOTE: *Reason for hand mixing is due to the fact that the mixture is relatively thick and sticky, and hand mixing it with some patience prevents you from over-mixing the batter and making the cake tough.
